  • Anusvarah and Visargah always follow vowels. Anusvarh provides an ending sound to vowels and produced by clsoing the mouth. Visargah is sounded by pushing the air out giving an echo like end to vowel sounds.

In addition to short and long form of vowels we also have protracted (प्लुत) form which we find in Vedic chanting. The following table tells more on the three types Hrisva, Dhirga and Plutha form of Vowels. The appended numbers "3" and "4" to letters represent the Plutha sound indicate the matra required.

  • All Hrisva vowels are one matra long when uttered.

  • Deerga vowels are generally two mathras long. ऐ and औ are three matras long as they are produced with one Hrisva vowel and one deerga vowel.

  • Plutha vowels are at least three matras long.

  • Hrisva vowel ऌ does not have a deerga form.

  • Nature comes to our help in understanding the difference between hrisva, dheerga and plutha sounds. Cuckoo bird or Koyal is often heard making the sound, ku koo kooo.
