प्रावेशिकः स्तरः - प्रथम-विभागः – वर्णमाला - अष्टमः पाठः - लेखनाभ्यासः - संयुक्तवर्णाः

We learn about........

Well, we hope you are comfortable writing the letters in Sanskrit Alphabet both Svaras and Vyanjanas. We learned to sound a vyanjana, it needs to combine with a vowel, as in क् + अ = क. Often two or more vyanjanas combine together with a vowel to produce an utterable compound letter.

Compound letters occur in many combinations in words. We will be learning in detail about compound letters more in coming lessons. In this lesson we primarily learn four compound letters which are frequently used in words. We see the combination of consonants involved in each compound along with the picture depicting the writing steps. As in earlier lessons, the compounds are formed in conjunct with vowel अ to enable their sounding. As in earlier lessons you may click the images to get an enlarged view and hear them sounded. If needed you may also copy the images and print them for off screen practice.

Sanskrit Consonants – Written Practice
संयुक्तवर्णाः - लेखनाभ्यासः
क् + ष् = क्ष्
क्ष् + अ = क्ष
ज् + ञ् = ज्ञ्
ज्ञ् + अ = ज्ञ
त् + र् = त्र्
त्र् + अ = त्र
श् + र् = श्र्
श्र् + अ = श्र

These four compound letters may look initially a bit complicated to write. But with practice you can master writing them.

You have so far learned how the consonant form look in conjoint with the vowel अ. How do we write the consonants when joined with other vowels and how are they indicated? The signs are called Svaramatrah (स्वरमात्रा:) or Gunitha गुणिताः. We learn about them in our next lesson.
